ICHN herbarium

The Institució Catalana d’Història Natural (ICHN) was created in Barcelona in 1899 and promptly was endowed with a library and a small museum that included—at least from 1904—a herbarium. This was kept on the premises of the institution in the Mountaineers’ Center of Catalonia (Centre Excursionista de Catalunya) until, first temporarily (1916), and then permanently (1917), remained under the responsibility of Pius Font i Quer (member of ICHN) in the Botany Section of the Natural Science Museum of Barcelona, where he was a naturalist since 1916. The herbarium remained deposited there until 1934, when the Botany Section became the current Botanical Institute of Barcelona (IBB), where it has conserved until now apart from the general herbarium.

This collection consists of 1,202 sheets (collected between 1819 and 1916 by about two hundred botanists) distributed in 26 boxes, each of them consisting of sheets corresponding to 2 or 3 different families, without any particular order. The herbarium is constituted in part by plants ceded by Frederic Trèmols to ICHN in 1912, as stated in the Proceedings of this Institution. It also conserves various plants from the exsiccata Plantes d’Espagne of Frere Sennen between the years 1905 and 1916, a collection donated to ICHN in 1916. Finally, it also contains some sheets collected by members of the ICHN.
