General herbarium

The main collection of the Botanical Institute of Barcelona (IBB) includes vascular plants collected for the most part by botanists interested in the flora of the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula. An important fraction was collected by Pius Font i Quer and his colleagues during their long campaigns over the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco. It also includes exsiccatae with European specimens such as Sennen’s Plantes d’Espagne, Flora Exsiccata Austro-Hungarica or Société pour l’Échange des Plantes Vasculaires de l’Europe Occidentale et du Bassin Méditerranéen.

The herbarium sheets are alphabetically ordered by genera and species. Specimens that still have not been identified at the species level are kept at the end of each genus. The following guides have been used for ordering the herbarium: Flora Iberica, Flora Europea, Flora dels Països Catalans and Catalogue des Plantes Vasculaires du Nord du Maroc.

Within each species, sheets are kept in coloured folders according to their origin. The colours used are as follow: blue for Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands; green for Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria; orange for the American continent; and, brown for the rest of the world.

This herbarium contains a large number of type specimens kept in red folders marked with the basionym’s name. These folders are intercalated in the herbarium under the accepted name and within the coloured folder according to their origin.

Currently this collection is being catalogued with a herbarium database including more than 120,000 specimens. In addition, sheets not yet available to the scientific community from Font i Quer and other collectors are being mounted and labelled.
