IBB student receives award for best oral presentation thanks to her Cannabis studies

Student Teodora Dalmacija has been awarded the prize for best oral presentation in the Biology section of the 2nd Biology and Psychology student congress in Koper (Slovenia). The paper «Traditional use of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) in the Balkans» was prepared during her stay at Botanic Instiute of Barcelona (IBB) in the framework of the ERASMUS+ programme and under the supervision of Manica Balant and Daniel Vitales in the summer of 2021.

During the months Teodora spent at the IBB, she conducted a literature search on the uses of hemp in the Balkan region. This study covered a time span of almost 60 years (1966-2021) and a total of 23 publications, obtaining numerous traditional uses of hemp that were included in the CANNUSE database. The author of the study stresses that the main use of hemp in this region is for fibre production, as well as the production of medicines and foodstuffs. The most commonly used parts of the plant are stalks and seeds.

IBB would like to congratulate Teodora on this great achievement and wish her the best of luck in her scientific career.
